Are You Ready to Adopt?

Families or individuals who are considering adoption need to consider several factors before they begin the often times arduous process of adopting a child. There may be many roadblocks and heartaches along the way, and those who want to adopt need to be ready both finanacially and emotionally for this wonderful journey.

What Can You Expect?

Your expectations will vary depending on the type of adoption you choose. If you are looking to adopt an older child, you may not have to wait long at all, and your initial expenses may be considerably less. There are many older children who are in need of permanent homes.

If you are waiting for an infant, your wait may be significantly longer. There are various types of adoptions, including open, closed, private, and international, and each of these have advantages and disadvantages. It will be your responsibility to look at all of the facts before you make your decision, keeping in mind that many things can go wrong along the way. Try to keep the ultimate goal always in your mind, which is holding your precious baby in your arms, especially when difficulties arise.

Are Your Ready for an Emotional Rollercoaster?

Ask any adoptive parent if they regret their decision to adopt, and almost all of them will respond with a resounding, "No!". They may also tell you, though, of the emotional rollercoaster ride that the adoption process was. There are so many factors that can hinder and even stop an adoption process, and of course, these will vary depending on the type of adoption you are involved in.

Some of these problems could be political if you are dealing with adopting from another country. Other problems may include a birth mother changing her mind. You should try to keep in mind that if the first adoption doesn't work out, there are many more children still in need of a home.

Are You Ready for the Financial Aspects of Adoption?

Adoption can be very expensive, especially if the baby you are adopting is a newborn. There may be some aid, however, and certain tax laws also help adoptive parents financially. Before you begin the adoptive process, you need to become familiar with all of the expenses that you might incur. These may also include travel and food expenses if you are traveling to another state or country to adopt your child.

How Do You Handle Nosy People?

Once you do adopt your baby, get ready for the onslaught of questions that will follow. People are naturally fascinated with adoptions, and many of those inquisitive folks don't have a problem with asking rather personal questions. Some of these might include the following: "Do you know who your baby's parents are?" "Why did they give up their child?" "How much did it cost you to adopt your baby?", etc.

As you can see, some of these are very personal, and you should not feel obligated to give out any information that makes you uncomfortable. There are several ways you can respond. You might just say something like, "We are our baby's parents!" "No, we don't know why the birth parents gave up their baby, but we are so happy they did!" "The cost of adopting our child is nothing compared to the joy she continues to give us!" You get the picture. Of course, if all else fails, you can simply ignore these nosy neighbors!

When and What Do You Tell Your Baby?

When and what you tell your child about his adoption is a very personal decision. You might want to talk to other adoptive parents who have already gone through the same thing and ask their advice. Many parents begin talking to their child about their birth when they are young. This would eliminate any surprises, and it might make the whole issue become just another simple fact in your child's life. Remember, do what is best for you and your child!
