Advantages of Adopting as a Single Parent
From LoveToKnow Baby
Adoption is an option that many couples pursue, but what are the advantages of adopting as a single parent?
Understanding the Advantages of Adopting as a Single Parent
Gone are the days when the only hope you had of adopting was as a couple. Today, many singles have made the decision to create their own families through adoption. Many of these parents are perfectly satisfied with their single status, choosing to concentrate fully on parenting and to forget about searching for a mate.
What are the advantages of adopting as a single parent? There are actually quite a few advantages, including the following:
- As a single parent, you are the sole decision-maker for your child. You don't have to worry about parenting disagreements and differences.
- Another definite plus for adopting as a single parent is that you no longer have to feel alone as you create your very own family through adoption!
- As a single adoptive parent, you don't have to worry about custody issues if the marriage or partnership were to dissolve.
- You have the opportunity to create a unique bond with your child that isn't shared with or by anyone else.
- Attachment issues may be lessened simply because there is only one parent that the child has to bond with.
- Adoption proceedings may be easier since you only have to worry about one set of applications, documents, personal interviews, home study procedures, background checks, etc.
- For older children, learning to live with one parent and adapting to his or her personality traits may be easier than trying to fit in with two parents.
- Gender issues are sometimes avoided when the adoption of a child is by a single parent.
Understanding the Disadvantages
While there are certainly advantages of adopting as a single parent, there are also disadvantages that must be considered seriously before you begin adoption proceedings. Some of the most prevalent issues include the following:
- Finances can be tight for single parents and the expense of the adoption can stretch a budget enormously. However, there are often tax breaks available that may help somewhat.
- Don't go into the adoption with specific expectations. While things may run smoothly for you and your child from the very beginning, parenting is tough in any situation. It can be emotionally and mentally trying on a single parent, particularly as you wade through the adoption process.
- You may have to shop around for an agency that will work with you, since some agencies will only represent couples. International adoptions and private adoptions are still options, however, so don't give up.
- As a single adoptive parent, you'll be on your own, particularly when it comes to decision-making, finances, and daily parenting responsibilities, such as picking up children from school, attending parent/teacher meetings, etc. Build a good support system around you and your child with friends and family members who can pitch in whenever you need some help.
- Being your child's sole caregiver means that you have to take off work when he is sick; you have to deliver her to play dates and parties; and you have to take him to practices and games.
- As the sole provider for your child, you will probably be the person who has to manage college tuition and other expenses in the future.
As a single adoptive parent, life may be difficult at times. However, you and your child can build a special bond and possibly become closer than normal simply because you depend so much upon each other. While there will be hurdles to overcome, hopefully the blessings you'll receive from this wonderful relationship will more than outweigh any difficulties you encounter.
