Baby Birthday Gift

From LoveToKnow Baby

What makes the perfect baby birthday gift? You really have a lot of choices, but you should also keep several points in mind. Does this baby already have an older brother or sister? If so, he may already be overloaded with toys. What is the age of the baby you are buying for? Choosing age appropriate toys is so important. Have you asked the parents of the child what they would prefer you buy? Although this isn't always convenient or possible, it may help you narrow your choices when shopping for the perfect baby birthday gift.

Family Dynamics

Believe it or not, family dynamics can help you make a decision as to the type of baby gift you should buy. If the baby you are buying for already has at least one older brother or sister, he or she may already be inundated with toys. It will be difficult for you to buy an item that he doesn't already have. If this is the case, you might want to consider skipping a toy as a gift and choosing something else useful, such as clothing, videos, or books. Obviously a toddler will not enjoy opening clothes as a present, so you will still need to purchase something fun for him to play with, although it can be inexpensive. Inexpensive items might include bubbles, coloring books, crayons, Play Doh, etc.

Age Appropriate Baby Birthday Gift

On just about any toy or game that you purchase, you'll usually find an appropriate age suggestion. It is important that you follow these recommendations because they serve a very important purpose. If you were to purchase an item that is actually designed for an older or younger child, the baby that you are giving it to will probably lose interest in it rather quickly. An even more important reason to pay attention to age recommendation has to do with safety. Many toys have small objects which could present choking hazards to younger babies.

Parental Suggestions

If you simply have no clue what to buy the baby for her birthday, ask the parents for suggestions. They'll probably be happy to provide you with a list of several items that you can choose from. If you have something in mind, ask them first.

Suggested Gifts

Since babies really aren't that hard to please, you'll have quite a few items to choose from. These may include the following:

  1. Books-For smaller babies, choose board books and rubber or cloth books.
  2. Puzzles-Many puzzles have small knobs which make it easier for baby's tiny fingers to use.
  3. People and animal figures-Once the baby is old enough to walk, he may delight in manipulating small toys. Be sure you pay attention to the age appropriate suggestions, though!
  4. Videos-There are so many wonderful children's videos today. Many of these entertain while educating at the same time.
  5. Accessories-Accessories can include items such as funky rain boots, small child appropriate flashlights, sleeping bags, activity rugs, picnic sets, etc.
  6. Collectibles-You can help start a child's collection of porceline figurines, china dolls, collectible model cars, etc., but you'll probably want to give him or her something he or she can play with, too.

Don't worry too much about your gift, however. Babies just love presents!
