Your Baby's Pediatrician and You

Before your baby is born, you'll want to choose a pediatrician that you can trust. You may want to ask other mothers for their recommendations. Once your little one has arrived, it is important to establish good communication with your baby's doctor. After all, if you don't have access to your child's pediatrician, how can you establish a reliable health care system?

Baby Health Insurance

If you haven't already done so, it is important that your child is covered under a health insurance plan. If you or your spouse do not have health insurance, you should still be able to procure some for your baby. You will need to research your state's child health insurance options and cover your child as soon as possible.

Newborn Baby Health

If this baby will be your first, then you may be overwhelmed at the thought of keeping such a tiny infant healthy. Rest assured, however, that babies are surprisingly resilient and tough. You'll need to set up a schedule of well-child doctor's visits, so that your pediatrician can monitor your baby's growth and development, and so that she can make sure your baby receives all of his immunizations.

Common Illnesses

Unfortunately, your baby will suffer occasional bouts with childhood illnesses, such as colds, ear infections, sore throats, stomach viruses, etc. You'll want to keep him as comfortable as possible and well-hydrated. There will be times when you may need to contact your doctor, so keep his or her number handy.

Baby's Teeth

Although baby may be irritable as he begins the teething process, you and he will be proud of those first pearly whites. You'll need to teach baby good dental hygiene by brushing those teeth early and often. Be sure you brush the gums, too. You'll only need a tad of toothpaste, and you can use a soft, clean cloth or a toothbrush specifically designed for babies.
