Baby Language Tips: Expose Baby to Language

One of the most important steps you can take to help your baby learn to talk is simply to talk to her regularly every day. Although you may feel as if you are talking to yourself most of the time when your child is just an infant, you are in fact giving her the basis for her language development. As she hears your words, she is learning different sounds, and as she grows and develops, she'll try to copy those sounds.

Baby Language Tips: Maintain Eye Contact

As you snuggle your infant close to you, talk or sing softly to her, and maintain eye contact as you do so. You are instilling a sense of security when you do this, but you are also teaching her the art of communication. You'll find her attention is captured by the expressions of your face and the varying sounds of your voice as you talk and sing to her.

Associate Words

As you read or talk to your baby, take the time to point out different objects and repeat their names. If you are reading him a book, point to different pictures and repeat the names of those pictures. As your child grows, you'll eventually be able to point to those pictures and have him tell you the names of each object. Look for opportunities to expand his vocabulary and his world. Take him on walks outside, and repeat the names of the things you see together, such as dog, flower, tree, clouds, house, etc.

Baby Language Tips: Change Your Tones

As you speak to your baby, you may find that you naturally emphasize syllables and change your voice tones. If this doesn't come naturally to you, however, make an effort to do so, anyway. The changing of your voice and the emphasizing of certain syllables will hold onto your child's attention, and she'll become more fascinated with copying your sounds.

Baby Language Tips: Sing to Baby

Why are nursery rhymes so popular? Most nursery rhymes have been handed down from generation to generation. In fact, the nursery rhymes and silly songs that you sing to your baby were probably sung to you. How else would you know them? Just as they helped develop your language skills, they can help your baby. So, have fun, and teach your little one all of those old favorites. One day you'll be singing them together!

Baby Language Tips: Read! Read! Read!

There can never be too much emphasis placed on reading to your child. This is a habit that should last a lifetime, and you can begin instilling it when your child is even in utero! Once your baby is born, read to him every day. It doesn't matter if he can't understand a word you are saying. Eventually, he will, and reading will help foster his language development. Besides, it's fun!
