Baby Night Light
From LoveToKnow Baby
Some parents have questioned whether using a baby night light can harm a child's eyes. Others sing the praises of night lights as a calming influence over their babies during the night. Should you use a night light? If so, what type of night light is best for your baby's room?
Baby Night Light and Eyesight
Not too long ago, a study attempted to link a correlation between night light use and an increased risk of nearsightedness in children. This study caused quite a stir, but since then, a new study has actually found no evidence of a connection between the two. Fears that night lights might actually damage babies' eyes appear to be unfounded.
Night Light Use
Although there isn't any evidence that baby night lights cause eye damage, there also isn't any reason to use night lights in babies' rooms, especially babies who are under the age of two. You may also discover that your baby will sleep better in a completely darkened room.
Babies who are younger than two and a half or so typically don't suffer from night terrors or nightmares. Of course, once your little gets a little older, he may begin to imagine that all sorts of creepy, crawly things live in his closet and under his bed! If so, by all means use a night light if it makes him feel better and more secure!
Night Light Choices
There are several different types of night lights that you can purchase for your child's room.
- If you do want to use a night light in your baby's room when she is an infant, you'll want to purchase one that has very low lighting, and place it in an area of the room that provides the lowest possible lighting for baby's bed.
- Some baby monitors also include remote night lights.
- Some baby night lights even play music and can be set to project images on the wall or ceiling. Of course, you won't want to use these features when baby is asleep!
- There are also auto-sensor night lights available. These automatically turn on as the room darkens, and they turn off as the room lightens.
