New or Used Baby Nursery Furniture

Once you begin letting friends and family know your good news, you may be offered all kinds of baby nursery furniture. While some of this furniture may actually be welcomed, you may want to politely decline some of the other furniture that is offered to you.

It really is up to you as to your preference for new or used furniture. Since babies grow quickly, some used furniture may actually be almost like new but cost much less, which may mean significant savings for you.

You don't have to take out a loan, though, to buy new baby furniture. In fact, you really don't have to furnish the whole room. Instead, you could only purchase a couple of pieces, namely a bed and chest. When you can afford it, you can add more pieces of the set to your little one's room.

Antiques, Anyone?

Some parents don't want the uniform and organized look of perfectly coordinated furniture. Instead, they look for interesting and even eclectic antique pieces. Many of these pieces may not be classified as baby furniture, but they can look beautiful in a baby's room.

Why not search for a lovely walnut chiffarobe to showcase your baby's adorable clothing and accessories? You could also add a charming antique rocker to use when soothing your infant to sleep. Embellish these unique pieces with old lace, hand-sewn quilts, and hooked rugs to give your baby's nursery a classic and elegant look.

Furniture Choices

When you are searching for the perfect baby nursery furniture to use in the nursery, you may discover that you have a wide variety of choices.

Baby Beds

Today's baby beds aren't just designed to be used until baby becomes a climbing toddler. Instead, many baby beds or cribs are actually convertible beds, and your child can use them for several years. Many cribs now offer the option of converting into a toddler bed, and when your child has grown even more, they become the head and foot boards of a twin size bed. When you are considering what type of bed to purchase, you might want to keep these choices in mind, especially if you are budget conscious about your buys.

Changing Tables/Dressers

Most parents need to have some type of changing table in the nursery, as well as a dresser to store baby's clothing. If your baby's room is space challenged, then why not purchase a piece of furniture that functions as both a changing table and a dresser? Once your child has outgrown the need for the changing table, this convertible piece of furniture can easily be made into a stylish dresser by simply removing the changing pad and/or railing.

Rocker or Glider

An almost essential necessity in any nursery is some type of rocker or glider. Both of these will get the job done, so what you choose is really a personal choice. A rocker may have the more classic look you are looking for, while a glider may feel and look more contemporary. Gliders do have the advantage of staying put on the floor, while rockers may "walk" across the room when in use. Still, it really just comes down to personal preference when you are making your choice.

Safety Issues

Finally, before you get too caught up in all of the money you can save by borrowing or buying used baby nursery furniture or antiques, you really need to pay attention to safety. You shouldn't borrow or buy a used crib unless it has been made in the last few years. Older cribs may have crib rails which are spaced too far apart and can cause a strangulation hazard to your child. Older rockers and/or recliners may also be hazardous. Be sure you inspect all of the furniture you purchase to make sure each piece is safe and sound.
