Choosing a Theme

Before you can begin decorating your baby's nursery, you may need to look at several baby nursery themes. Don't dive headfirst into a decorating frenzy, however, until you consider how the nursery will be used.

  • Do you like the thought of decorating again in a couple of years?
  • Would you rather choose a theme that can be adapted as your baby grows from a newborn into a toddler and beyond?
  • Will you find out the gender of your baby before he or she is born?
  • Do you want to veer away from traditional baby colors and be a little bolder in your decorating scheme?

Once you've gotten a good idea about how you want to proceed with your baby's room, it's time to choose a theme. Remember, themes for babies' rooms can often work well for boys and girls. Puppies, bears, Disney characters, balloons, clowns, frogs, turtles, fish, and many other themes will look adorable in any baby's room.

Baby Nursery Ideas

When searching through baby nursery ideas, it's always a good idea to take along a notebook or binder and jot down and/or place samples of the materials, paint colors, and accessories that you favor. Paint and fabric stores will typically give you samples that you can take home and muse over. Be patient. Designing your baby's nursery won't happen overnight.

Sometimes, your best ideas might come from decorating magazines, home and garden television shows, or your friends' homes. Although of course you wouldn't want to copy someone else's nursery, you may find yourself inspired after looking at babies' rooms in the homes of friends, neighbors, and relatives.

You may find that it's easier to start out with a comforter set, baby accessory, or a simple blanket, and work your color scheme and décor pattern from that one item. You can build a room from one object by pulling the main color and accent colors to use on the walls, in the curtains, paint trim, and throughout the room with accessories and other details.

Do-It-Yourself Projects

Have you considered adding a mural to the nursery or hand-painting a stencil on the wall? What about free-handing a design? Not comfortable handling a do-it-yourself project on your own? Enlist the help of a creative friend or hire a professional. The following Websites will help you get started:

Where to Shop

Finally, some of the best places to find baby nursery ideas are at stores, both online and in your city or town. Larger, department stores may have nurseries set up as a form of advertising, and while you might not be able to afford their designer prices, you can certainly find creative inspiration.

Don't overlook online auction sites, such as eBay. You might just discover another person's junk can become your treasure! Because baby items are often very gently used, and many are just like new without the new prices, you may be able to find some great bargain items for your child's room.
