Baby Shower Food Theme
From LoveToKnow Baby
If you're at a loss for unique baby shower ideas, consider a baby shower food theme. You have to have food anyway-- why not make it the center of the shower?
Choosing a Baby Shower Food Theme
Almost any type of cuisine could work for a baby shower, but your decision will largely depend on the style and feel you are going for. Do you want a sophisticated, ladylike shower? Then a tea party theme might be appropriate. If you're aiming for a festive affair, a Mexican fiesta is more in keeping with your plans.
Here are a few of our favorite baby shower food themes.
Mexican Fiesta
For a fun, lighthearted party, try a Mexican fiesta. Mexican food offers many dishes that are perfect for a themed baby shower, including:
- Enchiladas
- Tacos
- Burritos
- Fajitas
- Nachos
- Flan
These foods lend themselves well to a buffet table. If you prefer, you could have a multi-course meal, beginning with an appetizer of chips, salsa, and guacamole and ending with a flan dessert.
Be sure to play Mexican music for your Mexican hat dance! If you're at a loss for entertainment options, simply use traditional baby shower games with a Mexican twist. For example, make the Name Game unique-- and tricky-- by requiring that all names must be in Spanish.
English Garden
If the weather is agreeable and the flowers are in bloom, throw an English garden party. White wicker outdoor furniture and an elegant tablecloth in a simple design set the tone for this classy shower. Food should be simple and sophisticated. Some ideas include:
- Cucumber mint sandwiches
- Watercress sandwiches
- Egg salad sandwiches
- Cream
- Scones
- English trifle
- Tea
For proper presentation, remove the crust from the sandwiches and cut them neatly into small squares or triangles. Appropriate baby shower favors include decorative seed packets, miniature bouquets, potted plants, and birdhouses.
Tea Party
For an elegant indoor baby shower, try an old-fashioned tea party baby shower. For this type of shower, keep the decorations feminine, with flowers, pastels, and lace. Since tea is the focus of the party, invest in a beautiful teapot and tea cups. Don't forget the extras, such as sugar tongs and stirring sticks. Tablecloths, napkins, and place settings are always important, but they are even more so at a tea party. Make sure each setting is well put-together.
Food should also be delicate and could include:
- Elegant finger sandwiches
- Fresh fruit
- Petit fours
- Cookies
- Chocolates
- Chocolate-dipped strawberries
And of course, tea! For party favors, personalized tea bags are a nice idea. If you have a larger budget or a small guest list, you could use commemorative tea cups or miniature tea pots. The Rosemary Company sells several tea party favors and novelties, including themed sugar cubes.
Barbecue Baby Shower
If you prefer a more relaxed shindig, a barbecue baby shower just might be the thing. This type of shower works best in the summer. It is also a nice choice for large, co-ed gatherings. Decorations can be simple for a barbecue bash-- picnic tables covered in checked tablecloths are highly appropriate. Food is usually simple, with items like:
- Chicken legs
- Hamburgers
- Hot dogs
- Brisket
- Ribs
- Kabobs
- Potato salad
- Chips
- Lemonade
- Fruit salad
- Apple pie
Dessert Shower
Everyone loves dessert, and dessert in itself can make a great baby shower food theme. For an added touch of fun, combine your dessert theme with another, baby-related theme. For example, if you choose a teddy bear theme, you can create teddy-shaped cakes, cupcakes with teddy adornments, and teddy bear cookies. Or, for a simple and sophisticated party, choose upper crust desserts, such as French pastries. Regardless of secondary themes, the following desserts are always well-received:
- Angel food cake
- Pound cake
- Petit fours
- Cheesecake
- Black forest cake
- Cupcakes
- Tiramisu
- Napoleans
Another fun take on a dessert theme is an ice cream buffet. Include multiple flavors of ice cream, along with all the fixings: bananas, cones, whipped cream, nuts, cherries, and candy toppings.

Thanks Vicki! Great ideas!-Susie

The theme for the cake could be "Bath Time." Use decorative ribbon, blue striped and yellow striped, yellow rubber duck as a topper and other bath items such as shampoo, baby wash, lotion, wash clothes etc.
