Giving a Baby Shower Speech

What is the purpose of a baby shower speech? Well, that depends upon who is giving it. For instance, the hostess or hostesses might decide to get the party started by giving a short welcome speech to all the guests who've come to celebrate the big event. Guests may even want to get in on the act with a short speech about the honoree. Of course, the mom-to-be sometimes is called upon to give a speech sometime during the celebration as well.

If you are in the midst of planning a baby shower, then you'll need to decide if and when a speech might be appropriate. Does every shower demand that a speech be given? Of course not! In fact, this might be something you want to talk to the guest-of-honor about. Some honorees are not comfortable either with the idea of giving a speech or being on the receiving end of one. Since it is important that the shower is fun and as stress-free as possible, forgoing the baby shower speech isn't the end of the world!

Types of Speeches

If a speech is on the agenda, what type of speech should be given? The following suggestions might make speech preparation a little easier.

Hostess's Speech

More often than not, it is the primary hostess's responsibility to give a speech. However, if she isn't a confident speaker and another hostess is perfectly willing to speak in front of a crowd, that is acceptable, too. A hostess's speech is often personal and may include the following elements:

  • Links to the honoree-How do you know the guest of honor? How long have you been friends? What were the circumstances that surrounded the beginning of your friendship?
  • Personal stories-These could include cute stories on how the mom-to-be felt about children before getting pregnant or her reaction when she found out the good news. You might want to share a speech that is reminiscent of how she and the baby's father met as well.
  • Addressing guests-Another responsibility of the hostess is to thank the guests for their attendance and their gifts. If there are other hostesses who helped with the shower, now would be a good time to introduce each of them personally and thank them as well. If there are any directions that need to be given, such as the agenda of what is planned for the rest of the shower, this could also be included at this time.
  • Conclusion-The conclusion to the speech could be as simple as inviting guests to fix their plates and have a seat or calling the mom-to-be up to the front so that she can give her own speech.

Mom's Speech

It's completely appropriate for the mom-to-be to give a speech as well. This speech could include the following:

  • Expressing thanks-One of the first things she should do is express thanks to everyone who is responsible for making her shower such a wonderful celebration. This should include the hostesses, guests, and others, such as her mother, mother-in-law, etc.
  • Personal stories-She might want to share with the shower guests the story of the moment she found out she was pregnant, along with any other details she doesn't mind telling, such as possible baby's names, reasons for the names, etc.
  • Future dreams-The guest-of-honor might enjoy talking about her dreams of being a mother, including future plans for the baby.

Other Ideas

A baby shower speech could include other topics, such as the miracles of life and joys of motherhood. Baby shower poems and sayings could also be incorporated into the celebration as well. Finally, if you are still stumped for speech ideas, there are numerous speeches online that you can order at sites, like Speech Writers and Pocket Poet.
