Baby travel overseas may not be as simple as packing a suitcase. Besides making sure that you have everything you need to make baby's trip as pleasant as possible, what other preparations should you make before beginning your journey?
What to Pack
Baby travel overseas means you may feel like you've packed everything but the kitchen sink! Babies require lots of extras that you and he simply can't live without. You might want to use the following checklist as you begin to prepare for your trip overseas.
- Diaper bag
- Diapers and wipes
- Diaper ointment
- Several changes of clothes (Some of these can be packed in a suitcase, while others need to be in a carryon diaper bag for easy access.)
- Pacifier (If your baby takes one of these, encourage her to use it on takeoffs and landings to relieve her ears from excess pressure.)
- Bottles
- Formula (If your baby is under one year, she still needs [formula] or [breast milk].
- Juice
- Baby foods (Pack easy-open jars and cartons.
- Spoons
- Bibs
- Baby pain relievers
- Thermometer
- Socks
- Jacket
- Hat (For sun protection and/or warmth)
- Gloves (If necessary)
- Sunscreen
- Toys
- Books
- Burp cloths
- Diaper sacks (for dirty diapers)
- Diaper pads (to change baby's diaper)
- Blankets (at least two)
- Ziplock baggies (to put dirty clothes in)
- [Port-a-crib] (unless your hotel has a crib for baby)
- [Stroller]
- [Baby carrier]
- Air safety vest or harness (If your baby is over two, you'll need to bring a car seat]]
Obviously, you'll probably need to add more items to your list!
Vaccinations
Although many diseases have been virtually eradicated in the United States, they still pose risks in other countries. It is imperative that you make sure your baby is up-to-date on his [vaccinations]. If your not sure, check with your pediatrician. Be sure you tell him exactly where you are going! You'll want to have your baby vaccinated in the United States, not in a foreign country. Foreign countries may not follow the same safety standards as the United States.
Baby Travel Overseas Passport Info
Does your infant need a passport? The answer is yes.
- It doesn't matter what age a person is, they will need a passport with their own name.
- Parents are allowed to apply for a passport in their child's name, but the child must be with them at the time.
- Bring some form of identification for you that includes a picture, and bring your child's birth certificate.
