Bouncer for Preemie

From LoveToKnow Baby

Finding a bouncer for preemie babies can sometimes be a challenge. While full term babies fit perfectly fine in a regular size bouncer, preemies often appear almost lost.

Keep your preemie snug and secure.

Must Haves

As you prepare for the birth of your baby, you stock the nursery and wait expectantly for the big day to arrive. Soon, you'll be bringing baby home. For parents of premature babies, however, the surprise may be an early arrival date that finds you worried and unprepared. There are many items that you need regardless of your baby's size, including:

  • Diapers and accessories
  • Clothing
  • Blankets
  • Burp cloths
  • Rocking chair
  • Baby monitor
  • Bottles
  • Diaper bag

While your baby will certainly need your attention throughout the day, there will be times when you'll need to put her down. Preemies often need that added sense of security that comes with swaddling, and a bouncer for preemie babies should also give them a snug feeling as well.

Bouncer Support Options

You've gotten lots of gifts from all of your friends and relatives, and some of those gifts may include a baby bouncer. Sure, you can return it, but if you really love the style and want to use it, try the following:

  • Purchase a head support for your premature baby. Many of these are designed to cup baby's head along the top and sides. You may need to add a Velcro strip to the bouncer and to the back of the head support to keep it in place. Remove the Velcro strips once your baby has gotten strong enough to hold his head more erect.
  • Create your own head support by placing rolled up cloth diapers or small receiving blankets along the side of your baby. Use caution when doing this, however. You never want to create a suffocation risk for your child. If you choose to create a support, never leave your baby unattended. She could move her head to one side or the other causing a risk of smothering.
  • Making your own head support is as easy as purchasing a receiving blanket or baby towel and some polyfill stuffing. Take a look at how these are constructed, then measure the top of your baby's head from above one ear to the other. You'll probably want the diameter of the rolled head support to be about two inches. Sew the sides together, creating an open-ended cylinder. Sew one end shut, then turn the piece right side out. Stuff with the filling, then sew the other end shut. Add Velcro to the head support and to the bouncer.

Bouncer for Preemie

A bouncer for preemie babies should provide the following:

  • Soft support for baby's head, neck, back, and sides
  • Soothing vibrations
  • Soft music (You may find one that offers a variety of musical selections.)
  • Detachable toys (These should be eye catching, and they may rotate.)
  • Removable and washable pad
  • Nonskid feet (You don't have to worry about your baby's bouncer walking across the room!"
  • Foldable (It should fold flat for easier storage and transportation.)
  • Sturdy frame (Although your baby will grow quickly, you'll still want a bouncer that is sturdy and durable.)

Where to Shop
