Parents choose adoption agencies for a variety of reasons. Those who seek out Christian adoption agencies typically do so because they are interested in the agency's philosophy. For many people, that philosophy is just as important as the services an agency offers.

Denomination or Independent

Just because an adoption agency calls itself a Christian agency doesn't necessarily mean that it is affiliated with a particular religious organization or denomination. Some agencies are actually supported by particular denominations, and they may choose to only work with those parents who follow the same faith. Depending upon the agency, the limitations on who can adopt can be very restrictive. They may require proof of a person's affiliation with their specific religious organization, including letters of recommendation from clergy, etc. Other agencies may not be quite so restrictive and require only one parent to be affiliated with their denomination. The details and requirements should be spelled out in the initial interview so that prospective parents know immediately if they can proceed with that particular agency.

Other agencies may consider themselves independents, meaning they aren't associated with any specific religious organization. Instead, they often view their work as a mission or a calling as they help families and children unite. These agencies may only require a parent or parents to proclaim to be of the Christian faith without evidence of any particular Christian affiliation.

Adoption Requirements

As with any adoption agency, Christian adoption agencies may have specific requirements established regarding prospective parents and adoptable babies. For example, some Christian adoption agencies will accept gays and lesbians as prospective parents, providing their home study meets with approval. Other agencies, however, may not be open to working with singles or couples of these sexual orientations.

Christian adoption agencies may also handle international adoptions. While agencies may still have prerequisites set regarding religious beliefs, age, and/or sexual orientation, Christian agencies typically have to follow the guidelines established by the countries from which parents are adopting. Even though an adoption agency is considered a Christian agency, it still must follow all of the laws and regulations regarding international adoption. If you are considering an international adoption and you want to use a Christian adoption agency, be sure the agency you work with is well equipped to handle all of the issues regarding adopting a child from another country.

Adoption Process

The adoption process through a Christian agency is typically similar to any other adoption agency. Prospective parents must complete a home study. They must also fill out all the paperwork and any other documentation that is relevant to the adoption. The expenses can vary widely based upon the situation, agency used, etc. In some cases, parents may be able to find financial aid through their church or religious organization.

Choosing an Agency

As you begin the path to adoption, you'll want to choose an agency that works with you and for your best interests.

Ask for recommendations from others who have already successfully adopted.
Talk to your pastor, preacher, or clergyman for advice and recommendations on agencies that handle Christian adoptions.
Spend time talking to the personnel of each agency in which you are interested. Ask for written information on the adoption process, requirements for adoption, fee schedule, rules and regulations, and any other information regarding the adoption of a child.
Take your time. You must realize that adopting a child is a lifelong decision that can't be taken lightly. It will take some time before the dream of adoption will come true.
