Crib Choices
No matter what style crib you choose, there are several points you should keep in mind.
- Beware of used cribs. While you may save some money, the used crib you borrow or purchase may contain safety hazards such as too widely spaced slats, loose nuts and bolts, or lead paint. Cribs manufactured today must meet safety standards that are set up by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
- Convertible or standard? Many people prefer convertible cribs which can be used as toddler, twin, or even full beds as your child grows. Others, however, simply prefer a standard crib.
- Round cribs. Round cribs have also become popular, although they are typically more expensive than a standard crib. Before you purchase a round crib, however, consider the space you have available in the nursery or baby's room. Round cribs may need more space than standard cribs, so consider the nursery's layout before purchasing.
- Canopy cribs. Some parents prefer the look of a canopied crib, which adds character to any baby bed. In most cases, you have to buy a special crib with the canopy attached, but you can achieve a similar look by using netting which hangs suspended from a ring at the ceiling instead.
