Dr. Seuss Nursery Ideas

From LoveToKnow Baby

Finding Dr. Seuss nursery ideas can be challenging because Dr. Seuss nursery décor items are somewhat scarce. Putting together a Dr. Seuss nursery requires a little flexibility and a lot of creativity. Moms looking for a themed set, complete with matching curtains and lampshade will be disappointed. Put the debit card away, and be ready to use fabric, color, and DIY skills to put together the perfect Dr. Seuss nursery for a new baby.

Dr. Seuss Stories

The Cat in the Hat is one of the most popular and well-known Dr. Seuss characters, but he is by no means the only one. The first step in creating a Dr. Seuss nursery is selecting a specific book or character as the nursery's theme. The Cat in the Hat is certainly one choice, but Horton from Horton Hears a Who could make for a playful and whimsical nursery. While the book has very simple line drawings, the movie version features a lot of soft, rich colors that could make for a lovely nursery for a boy or girl. One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish has a nifty fish theme and a vibrant color scheme that would capture any baby's attention. The Lorax has soft, bright colors, and of course, the lovable little Lorax himself. Moms can choose a book that they enjoyed as a child or just do Dr. Seuss's books as a general theme.

Bedding and Window Treatments

The selection of pre-made Dr. Seuss crib bedding is very slim, although Pottery Barn Kids does offer a set that includes characters from Cat in the Hat, Horton Hears a Who, and Green Eggs and Ham. The characters are only featured on the fitted crib sheet; the actual quilt and bumper pad are done in solid and striped red, blue, and yellow.

A better choice may be to make a quilt and bumper pad. J and O fabrics sells Dr. Seuss fabric, but the style is currently out of stock. Dr. Seuss fabric is also sometimes sold on eBay, but generally in smaller quantities and at a fairly high price. Quilts are a great way to incorporate smaller pieces of fabric with coordinating solids or prints. To use a specific book or story as the theme for bedding, find solids or prints in the colors featured in that book and look for iron-on characters to embellish the bedding.

A cute valance can be made with a small amount of fabric, or curtains can be made from a solid-color fabric with iron-on characters. Creative types can paint Dr. Seuss characters onto craft wood, and use these as custom tiebacks for curtains.

Wall Decor

Wall décor is a great way to incorporate some of the best Dr. Seuss nursery ideas. This can be as simple as buying an extra copy of a Dr. Seuss book and framing the pages or buying an art print of a favorite Dr. Seuss character. Artistic moms can try printing out a Dr. Seuss character onto a transparent sheet of plastic, then projecting it onto the wall for a one-of-a-kind mural.

Dr. Seuss wallpaper borders were offered by Berlin Wallpaper, as well as a larger "Room Buddies" of the Cat in the Hat, but these are now listed on the website as discontinued. Ebay sometimes has this type of out-of-print item, and it may be worth it to check for these.

Another fun way to incorporate a Dr. Seuss theme into wall décor is to use letter stencils to paint a quote onto the wall. The quote could be painted in a single block of text on one wall, or painted around the top edge of all four walls to form a border. Hobby stores often sell large letter stencils for the wall, and for those who aren't inclined to be crafty, vinyl lettering can be custom made for a reasonable price.

Dr. Seuss Nursery Ideas

Dr. Seuss is a great nursery theme for parents who are tired of the same old pastel nursery décor. The whimsical characters and vivid color schemes make for a dynamic and stimulating nursery for any new baby and makes for a unique look for a child's room that will last long into the toddler years.
