Hair Bow Bands

For the baby who has a shiny, hair-free noggin, the best choice is a bow headband. These baby girl hair bows are great. Making hair bow bands is also simple and inexpensive to do!

Instructions:

  1. Purchase some elastic. This is the kind you use for other items of clothing, like skirts, shorts, pants, etc. You’ll want the elastic to be at least a ½ inch wide, so that it will fit more securely on your baby’s head.
  2. Purchase material. If you have any extra material around your home, you may be able to use that. If not, you can purchase wide ribbon, which is typically sold by the yard. As you can guess, it won’t take much to make a bow headband for your baby. Lace is another popular choice. Find ribbon and material in a variety of colors and patterns for a nice selection. Stay away from materials that might irritate baby’s tender skin, however, such as wools, mohair, etc.
  3. Cut your elastic. You want the headband to stay on baby’s head, but you don’t want it to be too tight. The best way to measure is wrap the elastic around your baby’s head and cut it to fit, allowing for a little extra to make the seam.
  4. Cut your material or ribbon. Most moms like the scrunched look for headbands. If you do, too, then you’ll probably want to cut the material twice as long as the elastic.
  5. Sew the material. Fold the material inside out, making sure that the folded section is still wider than the elastic. You can hand stitch or machine sew a seam which joins the outer edges. Don’t sew the ends!
  6. Turn the material right side out. The best way to do this is by hooking a safety pin at one end of the material and pulling that safety pin through the middle of the opening. The material will follow as you work your pin through the tunnel.
  7. Add the elastic. Again, the best way to do this is with a safety pin. Attach the pin to the end of the elastic, and work the elastic along the ribbon.
  8. Sew the ends. Now that the elastic is in place, you’ll need to sew up the ends and sew the two ends together to form a band.
  9. Embellish the headband. You can embellish the headband by adding bows, ribbons, or whatever else you choose. However, because babies love to put items in their mouths, be aware that any embellishments you use could come off. You don't want small items to wind up in your little girl’s mouth and become a possible choking hazard.

Hair Bows for Baby Girls

Other hair bows for baby girls include the more traditional bows that can be fastened to baby’s hair with elastic bands, barrettes, and even Velcro. Velcro works well for baby’s with fine hair. Again, you can make your own bows and glue or attach the bows to the barrette, Velcro, or band by using hot glue or thread.
