Infant Adoption
From LoveToKnow Baby
Infant adoption can be a long but rewarding process. There are many factors that can influence the outcome of an adoption proceeding. Prospective parents need to educate themselves thoroughly on their state's laws as well as the various types of infant adoptions that are available.
Adoption Help
When you begin your search for the right adoption agency, adoption attorney, and/or adoption facilitator, there are several points you need to keep in mind.
Open Adoption
In an open adoption, both the birth parents and adoptive parents are typically aware of each other's identities. The birth parents will be given certain agreed upon information as the child grows and matures. Depending upon the extent of the open adoption, some adoptive parents may choose to allow the birth parents to be somewhat involved in the child's life. Other agreements may only include sharing information about the child as he continues to grow.
Closed Adoption
In a closed adoption, records are typically sealed. Neither the birth parents nor the adoptive parents know the identities of each other. There is no contact between the involved parties.
State Laws
The adoption agency that you choose should be well aware of any laws pertaining to adoptions in your home state as well as any other state that may be involved. They should have experienced legal counsel that can handle any problems or issues that may arise.
Support
An adoption agency should offer prospective parents plenty of information and support during the adoptive process. The case worker should be easy to contact and thoroughly knowledgeable in the issues that surround your particular case.
Money
When you are beginning the process of adopting an infant, know where your money is going and why. Adopting an infant can be very expensive, but it doesn't always have to be, especially if you are adopting a minority child or a handicapped child. Be sure you know exactly what the fees and expenses will be before you begin writing checks! If the agency can't give you a clear price and a written agreement, go somewhere else! Adoption expenses can be anywhere from $5000 to $40,000. Find out what the money is being used for!
References
It is important for prospective parents to talk to other parents who have successfully adopted a baby. Not only can they give information and support, but they can also vouch for the adoptive agency's reputation.
Length of Adoption Process
There really isn't any way to tell exactly how long your particular adoption process will take. A lot of it depends on the type of infant adoption you are going through. In many open adoptions, the birth mother or birth parents reserve the right to choose the family that will adopt their child. Prospective parents may create portfolios outlining and illustrating their own lives.
Many agencies claim that they can help families adopt a child within a year or less. For those who are willing to adopt minority infants and special needs infants, the wait may be considerably shorter. There may also be additional financial aid if you choose this route.
Emotional Factor
Finally, adoptive parents need to understand that there will be highs and lows during the adoption period. It will take patience, communication, and perserverence before the entire process is over, and you are holding your precious infant. Educate yourself, and expect good communication and answers from the adoption agency or attorney that you use.
