Infant Clothing
From LoveToKnow Baby
If you are expecting a baby or in the process of adopting one, you're probably bustling around buying baby supplies, baby furniture, and infant clothing. Although you might get some infant clothing at your baby shower, there will probably be several items that you'll still need to purchase. If your baby is on the small side or even a preemie, you might have a little more difficulty finding infant clothing that will fit her tiny body. It can be done, however.
Preemie Clothing
If your baby is born prematurely, you'll discover that all of those adorable outfits you've stocked her room with just won't fit. Sure, one day your little darling will be able to wear them, but it will be a while. In the meantime, you need something to dress her in. Because you may not be able to find clothing for preemie infants at stores such as Walmart or Kmart, you'll simply have to expand your search.
Sometimes your best bet is to visit local baby specialty shops. Stores such as Babies R Us and The Children's Place typically offer some selections for premature or very small babies. You can also check out some great online shops, such as the following:
- Preemie- This store offers clothing for babies in sizes 0 to 10 lbs.
- Nurture Place - Nurture Place offers premature baby clothes for micro-preemies (1-3 lbs.; nicu safe) to toddler (24 month) sizes.
- Baby Ling-This store offers micro-preemie clothing, which covers 0-3 lbs., as well as preemie clothing up to 6 lbs.
- Itty Bitty Bundles-This store handles baby clothing from 1-10 lbs.
Newborn Clothing
Once you've discovered that you're expecting a baby, you'll probably find yourself drawn to the baby clothing section of every store that you enter. It's hard to resist those soft, pastel colors, lacy dresses, and footed pajamas! Even though you'll receive lots of great baby clothes, go ahead and pick out some things that you really like!
You'll want to take stock of your infant's layette, so be sure you have a well-supplied closet of the following clothing essentials.
- 6 to 8 newborn sleepers
- 3 or 4 newborn sleep sacks
- 5 or 6 t-shirts
- 10-15 onesies
- 2 jackets or sweaters
- 6 to 8 gowns
- 6 to 8 pairs of socks
- 2 to 3 newborn caps
- 6 pairs of socks and/or booties
Of course, on top of this list will be the dressier outfits that you buy or are given for your baby.
