Nanny Agency
From LoveToKnow Baby
What is a Nanny Agency?
A nanny agency is similar to an employment agency. An agency works to match nannies and families together, and they can represent one or both parties.
Nannies can sign on with agencies, and the company may then add the nanny to their database. Families can then search the database for nannies, reading profiles and looking for potential matches.
While the nanny can typically sign up with an agency for free, employing families will be charged a fee to use the agency's services.
Services
The services of nanny agency typically involve the following:
- Recruiting-A successful agency will recruit quality nannies for their service.
- Interviews-While the employing family will most likely be responsible for setting up a personal interview with the nanny, the agency should have already conducted a preliminary interview before signing the nanny. This interview will allow the agency to create information for the database that families can access.
- Background Checks-Some nanny agencies do background checks before signing a nanny with their company. Others charge the families additional fees to conduct a background check.
- Reference Checks-A reputable agency should follow-up on references before signing a nanny with the company. These references should be made available to the employing family as well.
- Referrals-In many cases, agencies will look at the nannies listed in their database and try to create a match based on a family's preferences. They will then make a referral of a nanny to a particular family.
- Fees-The employing family may be required to pay initial fees upfront and the remainder of the fees after the nanny has begun her employment.
- Follow-Ups-Most nanny agencies remain in contact with the employing family and the nanny. They typically want feedback as to the performance of the nanny and the working relationship of both parties.
- Nanny Contract-Many agencies suggest both parties sign a contract that protects the interests of the family and the nanny.
- Replacement Services-If a particular working situation is no longer acceptable for either party, an agency may work to find a replacement or new employing family.
Nanny Contract
A contract should be written in such a manner that it protects the interests of both parties. There are many sample nanny contracts that can be found online. The key to a successful contract, however, is modification based on the needs of all parties involved.
A nanny agency will typically offer a standard contract that can be modified if all parties agree. Your nanny agency can help you with issues regarding the contract. Some of the most common issues that are discussed include the following:
- Salary and Schedule-Your nanny should know exactly what she will receive as salary. She should also know what hours she is expected to work.
- Overtime-There may be circumstances which will require your nanny to work overtime. You and she will need to discuss overtime pay.
- Benefits-What type of benefits will be offered regarding vacation leave, sick leave, medical insurance, transportation, etc?
- Duties and Responsibilities-These need to be spelled out very carefully and should address all of the issues relating to childcare, including feeding, naptimes, playtimes, entertaining friends, discipline, etc.
- Emergencies-How will emergencies be handled?
Payroll Taxes
In some cases, employers prefer paying the nanny agency for their nanny's services. If this is the case, the agency is responsible for paying a nanny payroll tax. If you plan on paying your nanny yourself, however, you will need to pay the taxes, which will include federal unemployment, state employment, disability, Medicare, and Social Security. Consult you accountant for further information.
