If you are looking at a no back child booster car seat 30 pounds and up, spend some time researching safety ratings.

Child Booster Seat

The next step up from a toddler car seat occurs when your child reaches 30 to 40 pounds and you can begin using a booster car seat. There are two styles of booster seats. The first includes a back (which may be removable). The back allows you to adjust the seat belt so it fits properly across your child’s shoulder.

The no back booster seats, which just consist of a booster chair, are growing in popularity because of the ease of use. They are easier to install in the car and simply give your child height.

Wait Until Your Child is 40 Pounds

You will find that most car seat manufacturers recommend waiting until your child is 40 pounds before using just a booster seat. This is a safety recommendation, and/or requirement in many states.

Shopping for a Car Seat

If you are shopping for a no back child booster car seat 30 pounds and up, look for one that will grow with your child. If you plan to move the seat from car to car, make sure it is easy to install. Keep in mind that some highback car seats, like the Britax will give you more years of use.

Safety Ratings

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration rates all car seats based on safety and ease of use. Each rating is based on the following:

  • Whether the seat is pre-assembled or requires assembly after purchase.
  • Clarity of the labeling attached to the seat.
  • Clarity of written instructions regarding the seat’s proper use.
  • Ease of securing a child in the seat.
  • Whether the seat has features that make it easier to install in a vehicle.

Based on the above recommendations, the following car seats are recommended for around 30 pounds and up:

  • Combi Dakota (33 – 100 lbs)
  • Combi Kobuk (33 – 100 lbs; removable high back)
  • Cosco Ambassador (30 – 100 lbs)
  • Evenflo Big Kid (30 lbs – 100 libs; removable high back)

Most of the no back child booster seats are recommended for 40 pounds and up.

State Laws

If you are unsure what your state recommends, you can find the laws by state at Elitecarseats.com. Most states are working on tougher car seat standards, focusing on pushing legislation to require a car booster seat through age 8 and 80 pounds.

If you are unsure if your child is ready for a booster seat, remember it is better to err in the direction of car seat safety.
