Round Crib
From LoveToKnow Baby
A round crib is the next big idea in baby bedding. Whether you're looking for something different or need a specific size to fit in your nursery, this sort of crib could be the answer.
What is a Round Crib?
A round crib serves much the same purpose as a typical, rectangular crib. It's a safe, comfortable place for your new baby to sleep, and it provides security and support for infants up to toddlers. Round style cribs tend to have high sides and close-together slats, the way that other cribs do, and they also have custom fit mattresses that are made for the round shape. One section of the crib (instead of one side) will typically be adjustable, so that you can slide it up and down for easy access to baby. These cribs also can have posters, four spindles that reach up towards the ceiling and allow Mom and Dad to add a canopy to the crib if they choose.
Why Get a Round Style Crib?
One of the biggest benefits of a round crib is the style factor. These cribs are hot, and many celebrity moms have purchased round bedding for their kids because of the unique look of this crib. Some parents feel that a round bed or crib fits better into their nursery theme, as rounded cribs look more whimsical and childlike. Others choose the round crib because it can be placed in any area of the nursery and still look good. The round style makes it look great in a corner, against a wall or even in the direct center of the room. A final advantage to a round style of bedding is that changing the sheets on the mattress can be easier - you can get all the way around the crib in order to change the sheets.
Drawbacks of a Round Style
Of course, there are some drawbacks to purchasing a round crib. One of the biggest problems with this style of crib is the initial cost - which can be about three times the price of a standard crib. Another problem can be the cost of purchasing a mattress for your round bedding choice; round mattresses are also more expensive than typical crib mattresses, and a normal mattress will not fit into a round frame.
Bedding needs to be ordered from special stores or websites, as normal crib sheets, crib skirts and bumpers will not fit on a round style crib. Additionally, many cribs today are designed to grow with your child, and can convert from an infant crib, to a toddler bed, and finally to a twin bed for your older child. Round cribs are not able to convert - they are single use.
Where to Purchase a Specialty Crib
As the round style of crib becomes more and more popular, more stores are starting to stock this style. Your best bet when looking to purchase a round crib is to search for a local baby boutique or small specialty store; larger chain stores may be less likely to have a good selection of round style cribs. These cribs are, as previously mentioned, more expensive than typical cribs, so high-end boutiques are much more likely to carry them.
Another option is to order a crib online. There are quite a few sites on the Internet that are dedicated to selling round styles - and they offer these cribs in a number of different wood finishes and paint finishes. If you are looking for a specific sort of round crib (for instance, if you want to match a "natural" wood nursery set), finding one that will work is much easier with a wider selection online. This is also a great place to find round bedding; the selection will also be much greater.
One of the biggest sellers of round style cribs is Ababy. This site has many different styles, with prices ranging from about $700 to around $1300.
