Packing for Your Trip

Parents quickly learn that toddlers require quite a lot of extra equipment when traveling. What all do you need to pack for toddler travel?

  1. Diaper Bag-Unless your toddler is potty trained, you'll need to make sure your diaper bag is equipped with all of those essential necessities, including diapers, wipes, diaper ointment, and a change of clothes.
  2. Snacks-Remember, your baby's tummy is small, and he may get hungry quicker than you. Be sure you pack lots of nutritional snacks, such as crackers, cereal, and even small packs of baby or toddler food.
  3. Drinks-Your little one will get thirsty. Be sure you have an insulated drink carrier. You may need to add an ice pack to keep the drinks cool.
  4. Toys and Books-You'll want to keep your little one as occupied and entertained as possible. Be sure you pack plenty of toys and books for her to play with and look at.
  5. If you have access to a dvd or vhs player, plan on bringing along some of your child's favorite videos.
  6. If you are staying overnight, you may need to pack a portable crib or playpen, including sheets and blankets.
  7. Even if you are traveling in the summer, you should always pack a light-weight jacket to keep your little one warm in overly air-conditioned places and for cooler nights.
  8. You'll definitely want to bring a stroller, and you may also want a front or back carrier or sling.
  9. Don't forget the sunscreen! You'll want to protect your toddler's delicate skin.
  10. Go ahead and pack a hat, too!
  11. If your child is taking any medicines, don't forget to bring those along.

Planning Ahead for Toddler Travel

Your trip will be much smoother if you plan ahead.

  1. If you are planning an outing for the day, try to consider your toddler's habits first. Don't plan on leaving right before naptime unless your baby will have an opportunity to sleep in the car.
  2. Try to leave after your child has already eaten. If you wait until he is hungry, you'll end up dealing with a cranky toddler!
  3. If your baby isn't feeling well, plan on putting off your trip until she feels better.
  4. If your toddler doesn't like change, be sure you prepare her for the trip by explaining what you will be doing before you do it.

Airplane Rides

If you are going to be flying with your baby, there are several points you need to consider.

  1. While many umbrella strollers may fit in the overhead compartment, you may need to have the airline staff tag your stroller for you, so that you can pick it up as soon as your plane lands.
  2. If your toddler is younger than two years old, you don't have to purchase a seat for him. However, if you want to guarantee the extra space, you can purchase one. You can usually bring carseats to use on the plane. If you don't purchase a seat for your child, there are safety harnesses available for you to use on your child, although most of these haven't been approved for take-offs and landings.
  3. Remember, there isn't a lot of room to manuever in an airplane. Plan on bringing plenty of books, toys, and snacks to entertain your baby.

Car Rides

Even the most laid back child will get fidgety if he has to ride in a carseat for very long. If you are going on a long road trip, you might want to consider these trips.

  1. Plan to take frequent stops, so your toddler can stretch his legs, and you can stretch yours!
  2. If you don't have a television/vcr or dvd combination, you might want to purchase one. Most toddlers love to watch videos!
  3. Keep plenty of snacks in the car to give to your little one when he gets fussy.
  4. Sometimes, simply having someone else sit in the back with your toddler will make her happy.

Have Fun!

Finally, toddler travel doesn't have to be stressful! Plan ahead, and enjoy your time together!
