Types of Twins

Fraternal Twins – Non-identical twins whom are actually siblings sharing the same womb become referred to as fraternal twins. This type of twin pregnancy is usually genetically based and occurs when the woman’s ovaries release more than one egg at ovulation. This creates the potential for two separate eggs to be fertilized at the same time. If the uterus then accepts the implantation of the eggs then they will grow together as twins. Fraternal twins are easy to identify on an ultrasound as they always have their own placentas.

Identical Twins – The random occurrence of an egg splitting in two after fertilization produces identical twins. Usually the fetuses share the same placenta, but not always. Therefore, the only true way to be sure your twins are identical is through a genetic test. Identical twins are genetically identical and even share the same fingerprints.

Mirror Twins – Identical twins whose features mirror each other are known as mirror twins. In this case the babies will be almost identical except their features will be reversed. In this scenario, one would be right-handed and the other left-handed, or their natural hair part would be on the opposite side. It is similar to looking at a reflection in a mirror, thus the name.

Common Concerns of a Twin Pregnancy

• Amplified discomforts associated with pregnancy such as morning sickness, varicose veins, aches and exhaustion.

• Larger uterus later in pregnancy leading to weight and size issues.

• Increased risk of high blood pressure and related problems such as eclampsia.

• Potential risk of needed bed rest due to possible preterm labor contractions or other complications.

• Increased risk of congenital abnormalities requiring earlier ultrasounds and tests.

• Enlarged risk of hydramnios, when extra fluid develops around the twin fetuses.

• Strong need for adequate nutrition to prevent problems such as anemia and gestational diabetes.

• Potential growth issues as the babies fight for space and resources within the womb.

• Higher risk of premature birth.

• Significantly more neonatal care required, sometimes involving specialist doctors.

• Potential for the Twin-Twin Transfusion Syndrome where the shared placenta contains abnormal blood vessels affecting the babies’ ability to get necessary resources from the mother.

In a typical pregnancy, gestation is approximately 40 weeks. With a twin pregnancy the average falls to 37 weeks. Therefore it is reasonable to expect to deliver your twins early so take the time to begin planning for that now. Discuss with your doctor potential situations before labor hits you at two o'clock in the morning during your 33 week. Childbirth is a demanding adventure for a pregnant woman both physically and mentally. Take the time early in pregnancy to work out arrangements, and everything will go much smoother in the end.
