There's no shame in buying used baby stuff. Sometimes buying all of the essentials that your baby will need can get quite expensive. The good news is that you can find great, used items at a fraction of the price you'd normally pay. Many used baby items are in wonderful condition simply because they haven't been used much at all!
Types of Used Baby Stuff
While of course you woundn't buy used food or formula, there are many other items that you can buy used and save a lot of money, too!
- Clothing-Babies grow so quickly, and clothing can get expensive in a hurry!
- Shoes-Most babies don't wear shoes as often as other children and adults, so you should be able to find almost new shoes at a discount.
- Coats-Depending on the area of the country you live in, the used coats that you buy may be like new, also!
- Furniture-This is where you can really save money, but you'll need to use caution, too.
- Toys-As babies mature, their taste in toys will change drastically. You can pick up wonderful, used toys with plenty of play left in them.
- Accessories-Used baby accessories can include any number of items, such as bibs, burp cloths, towels, cups, bottles, sheets, blankets, thermometers, mobiles, bathtubs, potty chairs, etc.
How to Find Used Baby Stuff
Where can you find all of this used baby stuff? Check out some of the following places, and ask your friends for other ideas.
- Yard or Garage Sales-You can get find some really good deals on used baby items at these sales. For the best selections, get there early. If you see something that you're undecided about, come back by later in the day. If it is still there, you may get an even better deal!
- Consignment Shops and Sales-These are shops and sales where other parents just like you have brought the items their children have outgrown. When the items sell, they get a percentage of the sale, and then they'll have more money to spend on other items!
- Online Auction Sites-You can find some really good deals at these sites. Don't forget to factor in the shipping costs before you bid!
Safety Precautions
Finally, although you can save big bucks by buying used baby stuff, you need to pay attention to a few safety issues.
- Use caution when buying a used car seat. You want to make sure it is in perfect working order, and it should be fairly new.
- If you purchase a new baby bed, make sure it meets all safety standards. Bed rails that are too far apart can possibly strangle a child.
- Don't buy toys that are not age appropriate for your child. You don't want to risk a choking hazard.
- Check any used clothing and other items for loose buttons, snaps, and strings before you give them to your baby.
You can save a lot of money if you buy used baby stuff. A lot of the things you'll find may be like new. Remember however to always use caution with any items that you buy!

-- Contributed by: Susie1506Please remember: I got a crib given to me. I drove 35 miles to get it. It's really nice. I looked on line for a replacement mobile that came with the crib. Needless to say...Thank God I did this. Two infants died in this crib and over 1 million were recalled. So parents beware and check out everything you get. By no means am I to good for used items but just do your research on them!
