Maria, At eleven months, it is certainly reasonable to expect to begin having periods. In fact, that's about when I did for 2 of my children, so please don't worry.-Susie

I breastfeed my 11 mos. old daughter. Well my husband and i had sex and the next day i woke up and i got my first period since having her. I have cramps and heavy bleeding. I called the ob but they said i probably was getting ready to start menses but i dnt know anyone else have this problem ldt me know what you did?

Piwe, You definitely need to use birth control if you don't want to get pregnant. If you are menstruating, you are more than likely ovulating as well.-Susie

I am currently breastfeeding and have a period. What are the chances of falling pregnant? My daughter is 3 1/2 weeks old

Aoife, Typically, the pregnancy hormone, HCG, will appear anywhere from 6 to 12 days after ovulation.-Susie

hi, how long do you have to wait to do a preg test after having sex if you are still breastfeeding and your period has not started again yet?? thanks

Tara, Well there won't be any way to know for sure until you take a pregnancy test. Still, I think because the color is dark, it may just be "old blood", and your imagination is running rampant right now. As far as your milk supply. Your breastmilk is probably becoming more regulated especially if your daughter is eating on more of a schedule now. For your own peace of mind, pick up a pregnancy test at the drug store. Good luck!-Susie

I am breastfeeding my 7 1/2 week old daughter. I have been spotting for about a week now. Very very light spotting. The color is very very dark though - kind of like implantation bleeding which I did experience with my first pregnancy. I don't have any period like symptoms. Although I have noticed that my nipples are a little more tender when she is feeding. I don't know if I'm having a period - or if I am pregnant. I would say that surely I'm not pregnant - but my husband and I have been sexually active for about 3 weeks now. Should I be having a period this early into breastfeeding? I feel like my milk supply has decreased a little in the last few days and I usually have an over abundant amount and have to pump between her feedings! I don't know if that is true, or if my mind is playing tricks on me. Any thoughts?????

Sandra, It is possible that your cycle just hasn't become regulated yet. Since you are still breastfeeding, you may skip this month and have a period next month. Still, it is also possible that you are pregnant since breastfeeding doesn't necessarily keep you from conceiving. Sounds like you have to play the waiting game until you know for sure. Good luck!-Susie

So if someone is usually very regular such as me, when you are breastfeeding you can skip a month just like that? Thanks.

I am breastfeeding my 5 and a half month old baby and two months ago my period came back, it wasn't my typical 3 days heavy flow period, looked more like 2 days spotting but since it was very regular ( the 20th of march and the 21 of april) I was surprised to get menstrual like cramps but no bleeding on the 23th of this month of may, the cramping stopped but no sign of a period. I do feel tired and a bit nauseous but until i see those 2 lines on a pregnancy test I don't know what to think anymore, is my body playing tricks on me or am i pregnant? I also have a 19 month old daughter, when I was breast feeding her I got pregnant with my now 5 and a half month old baby, I had all the symptoms and although I was bleeding, spotting and still breastfeeding, I was pregnant when my first baby was only 4 months old... The nurse at the CLSC said when you are breastfeeding anything goes but can you really get back your period to have them gone 2 months later??? It's driving me crazy and I've got to wait till the 2 of june to test... thanks for any information...

Jana, Yes, this is normal. Your period may not become totally regular until you completely stop nursing. If you have more concerns, however, contact your doctor. -Susie

I am nursing my son who is 14 months old My period returned in Jan and it had been regular ever since last month when it skipped a month. I took a pregnancy test and it was negative is this normal thing to happen or is the test results wrong. Thanks

Lynette, Producing breast milk is all about supply and demand. You can keep pumping, and you should still be able to keep a certain supply of milk, although it may not be as much as when you were actually breastfeeding. Many women start their periods while still breastfeeding (I did), and they continue to have a good milk supply. The more you pump, the more milk you'll produce. As you ease off on your pumping, your milk supply will gradually dry up.-Susie

i'm a working mum and i had recently weaned my baby off from my breast completely. i would like to continue feeding her breastmilk (expressed). She started on solids (rice cereal) two weeks ago and she's six months. I just discovered my menses came back this morning. If i keep up with my expressing, would my milk supply maintain? Thanks!

Christa, I also took the mini pill while I was breastfeeding, and I went through the same thing. I had all the feelings, but I wasn't pregnant (even though I'd already convinced myself that I was!). The chances are of course much slimmer than if you weren't on the pill, but there is always a chance that nature has decided you need to be pregnant again. If I were you, I'd take one of those early detection pregnancy tests, just for piece of mind. Good luck!-Susie

I have a question, that may seem a little silly. I had my 2nd son last Jan. and I am still nursing him and will probably continue nursing until a year. I still have not gotten a period and I am on the mini pill (which I have forgotten to take in the past few weeks. Do you think there is a chance I could have gotten pregnant? I know it seems very far fetched, but I just feel very PMSish and bloated and this is how I felt when I got pregnant, both times. My second son was conceived two months after my period returned with my first son. I am just wondering because my son eats solids 3x a day and pretty much sleeps through the night so I only nurse him before naps and bedtime and it is not for very long. So could I have ovulated and not known it? And couldthe mini pill not have been effective?

Ola-You can continue to nurse, and your milk should still produce based on supply and demand. In other words, if you want to build your milk supply, you may need to nurse a little more often, at least until you notice a build up of milk. A word of caution, however--If you aren't using birth control, you'd better start unless you want to get pregnant again!--Susie
